Sports Softwares for advanced strategies

I've heard people talk of software programs that you can purchase and use to formulate customized strategies. What you do is just input several variables and thereafter you are able to see how teams fare against their opponents. Is research simplified since in this way you get to spot trends hidden away from the public?

That could very well be true and that software could be the answer that a lot of people have been searching for, but for me personally, I think that it's going about things in a very, very roundabout way.

It would be interesting to check out if such programs actually work in the first place. I wouldn't be surprised if there are people who've won by using such methods.

You could be right, lordcole. Do you think that there is some way we could find out for sure if those programs work? I would hate to shoot something down without giving it a chance only to find out later that it would have worked.
