I've read some threads here where advice is given to newbies to learn first and to gather information before placing a bet. My question is, where do you gather information about the horse races? Is there a site you go to?

There are sites where you can get important facts and links about the races in your area or online. I think a quick search would yeild you the information that you seek.

If it is a major race, check out the racing papers for your area, like the Racing Post or a dedicated sports publication or site. They will normally have details of upcoming races and runners. It's featured on channels like ESPN, but their coverage isn't so great for the smaller races. The other place to start is betting shops and sites, as they want you to bet so they'll give a lot of detail about what you can bet on.

I agree with Tolly, there are some good sports publications that offer sound advice. I also believe that word of mouth can be a strong source, asking experienced gamblers questions about the races. Just be careful with who you ask so you won't be mislead.
