General Does it mean it's addiction?

So, lets say that someone has no friends and family, no one to go home to, so they spend almost every night at the casino. Would you consider that to still be an addiction?

I agree with Lennart there, the person is just lonely thus he/she tends to go/do something that will make her/him less lonely.
But it can result to be addicted to anything that make her/him feel different.

Still I'd ask, what do they go to do at the casino? Are they always going there to play? Addiction is a totally different thing and it has many causes. However, it'd really be interesting to find someone who has no friends at all. Seems like a loner/introvert to me.

They play games to distract them self from "loneliness" if they are just lonely, saying that he/she is not an addict already.
My cousin who goes to casino just be surrounded with people and play games for a while, it was never an issue or an addiction to an extent. It really boils down to discipline.

I'm not a Psychiatry student, but as medical student I can say yes the person is not an addict yet.
But if he continues to mask it as loneliness soon enough it will be a addiction. He/she will mask it as an excuse to escape to reality resulting to being addicted to it.

Very true. When something is used as an easy escape route, then it tends to become an addiction. The worst thing is that people will not easily accept that they are too much into an activity.

From a medical point of view, I'd like to know what that phase, just before addiction, is normally referred to as. Addiction is so bad and in gambling, it can get to the extent of people disposing off their valuables and property.
