Horse & Dog Greyhound racing bans

Despite it's contribution to the economy, dog racing remains illegal in some American states as well as many other countries around the world.

I tend to think that it has more to do with regulation, plus a few bad elements and practices in the sport haven't made things any better.

What are your thoughts?

Bad elements will always arise anywhere and I think those are some of the factors that various jurisdictions examine, before arriving on the decision to ban.

On the other hand, questions always arise whenever Greyhounds (deemed surplus to requirements) are euthanized each year.

In my opinion, cases of animal cruelty and mass killings of greyhounds, could be the reason for the racing bans in some places. I always wonder what happens to the greyhound trainers and owners whenever such bans are put in place? It can be such a huge loss of livelihoods.

I think it comes down to responsible ownership and racing practices. I grew up on a farm that raised harness horses for racing and we treated them like family. Unfortunately, the dogs used for racing purposes seem to be treated as disposable in many cases and that gives the whole industry a bad rap.

Indeed, it gives the industry a bad rap. I also grew up around horses and it just seemed natural to treat them like part of us.

I never understand how people can be cruel to animals since Greyhounds in particular, are very docile.
