General Good for the brain?

Engaging in activities that require heavy thought and concentration is beneficial as it slows down the aging process.

On the other hand, the older we get, we stop using certain parts of the brain and they consequently become weaker.

Could we then say that gambling actually helps in keeping the mind young?

The argument has always been that gambling can be healthy, when done recreationally. Again, not all games in the casino are necessarily good for the brain. Take an example of slot machines that mainly ride on luck. Perhaps such games are only good for keeping the brain active.

I agree, Slot Machines depend with luck or programming all you have to is wait and pray if ever. But heck they are fun.

Most of the activities that we do for recreation are good for the brain but when there's no control, then they stop being beneficial.

I engage in gambling intermittently and it is usually fun. On the other hand, I have lost huge amounts of money while at it and it's never a good feeling.

It certainly doesn't hurt. Card games especially are good for this as they require constant attention on your part. I thinks craps is good for this too.

I would agree that card games can be good for the brain. Playing cards takes thought and concentration. Slots on the other hand probably don't do much for the brain. It take no thought or concentration to play the slot machines.

You could not be more right! I love to be in an engaging game with my friends. It really lets me focus on many aspects that might not be in the forefront of my mind. Yes, I would say that it keeps me young because I feel alive and connected to something other than home.

I love all your suggestions in this thread, the bottom line being that this stops being fun when addiction sets in. I wish everyone out there would just gamble responsibly.

I don't really think that the addicted gamblers have a choice one way or the other in their minds. It is similar to the drug addict that believes in his heart that the drug he does helps him in some way, when in fact, the opposite is true. Telling people to be responsible gamblers is like telling addicts that they can't have any more of their drugs. Things will go into a downward spiral that concludes with a drug addict or gambling addict selling their lives order to continue their destructive paths. I have seen it happen.

I'm not sure if we are on the same page here. Yes, telling an addicted gambler that gambling isn't healthy is really pointless. The point I want to bring out is that gambling stops being fruitful/productive when addiction or problem gambling sets in.
