General Setting an example for kids

For those of you who have children, do you discuss gambling with them or do you keep them completely away from it? I grew up going to casinos in the Caribbean with my parents and I think it helped me to have a grasp on responsible gambling. I'd like to teach my daughter the same thing, but I obviously can't take her to the casino with me in this day and age. What suggestions do you have for teaching kids responsibility?

I never talk of gambling to children especially because they may get it wrong right from the start. It is also not good taking them to casinos. I would prefer that they choose whether or not to gamble when they have come of age.

I've only had to discuss this with one child so far because he is old enough to understand. I think there is definitely an age where this topic is appropriate, especially because of the temptations of the internet. I don't think that it is a good idea to ever take a child to the casino, they would most likely get hooked instantly.

This is a topic that I normally discuss at length with my friends when we are at the casino and the one thing we agree on is that somehow someday, the kids will get to hear about gambling. In my view, it is not the best idea to take them to the casino irrespective of their age. You could keep discouraging them about gambling as a whole until they are at an age where they can do the research and make informed and responsible decisions.

Gambling in any form is very difficult to keep kids away from. No matter what you do they are going to see or hear about it somewhere. The only option we have as parents is to talk to our kids and keep an eye on what they are doing. If you notice something is up, then that is the time to intervene and take the appropriate actions.
