Craps Newbies getting advice from the dealer

Are dealers allowed to advice new players on how to play at a craps table? Is it really professional?

There is this dealer I once heard talking to a newbie and when I questioned him, I was silenced with a 'I have been doing this for years' reply.

This seems to me like a case in which you have a beginner in a table who has to be told everything by the dealer.

As long as the dealer doesn't seem to want to influence play by tricking a newbie, I see no problem with this at all.

Of course other players on the table should watch closely.

It's always been my understanding that it's inappropriate to ask the dealer for advice. It's a good way to get them to act rude because most of them won't give players their opinion.

It depends on what the advice is. If the newbie is asking the dealer to tell them what bet to place, then it's not appropriate for the dealer to suggest one. If it is help with the technicalities e.g. the newbie asks straight out, 'I want to put $10 on Red. How do I do it?' then I wouldn't see a problem. It speeds up play, and results in less fuss than a misplaced bet.

I've been in that same position myself where I had to ask the dealer for a little help and there is nothing wrong with that at all. In fact a few games later I had learnt enough not to need to ask anymore.

When I first read the title of this thread , Newbies getting advice from the dealers , I had to laugh
Back in the days when I first started playing craps it was a common occurrence to hear the stick man tell a player , "Play that 12 , it hasn't hit in awhile , it's about due"
or the old , "double up and catch up" after the shooter sevens out
Back in the old days it was very common for them to offer those gems of advice on a regular basis . In some casinos it
was a requirement for the dealers to help the players along in that manner , it was those little helpful hints that helped to increase the bottom line
