Blackjack Learning the basics

I'm just starting to learn the basics of Blackjack and I was wondering how everyone here learned the basic strategies to this game? I've seen some people who keep notes right next to them when they are playing at a table. Is this okay to do?

I am also just getting started and have found the internet to be such an important resource (I am taking one chart at a time). I doubt if I will be able to learn anything by keeping notes with me next to a table but I guess there's nothing wrong with that, or is there?

I've seen people with notes sitting next to them at blackjack tables and they have never been asked to put them away. I think the best way to learn the basics is to practice on the computer. That is how I learned because a computer game will tell you where you've made your mistake.

Personally, I found playing on small tables in casinos to be the best way to learn the game. I've seen people with notes but I'm not sure how much that helps. You need to play and learn from your mistakes as well as learn and interact with other players. A lot of gambling is understanding patterns and getting a feel for when to bet higher or lower.

Watch the winners. Take note of where they typically stand and hit in relation to the cards that are showing. Both theirs and the dealers.

And play. Play a lot. Practice makes perfect.

Blackjack is really simple and can be learnt by playing online or various computer games. The big step with gambling is staying calm when you are winning or losing real money. For this, you need to learn your betting personality by playing on small tables and just getting comfortable with gambling in general.

Playing on a small table or watching how the winners play look like two realistic strategies of speedily grasping the game. I would only use the computer to aid in my knowledge of the game but I think physically being next to the players themselves helps a lot (of course without taking notes at all).

I'm a big fan of playing the smaller tables and going to the casino during their slow times, especially for players just starting out. You'll likely find a few good players in there to observe without dealing with the big crowds that can be intimidating.

Although you can learn the basics of Blackjack from the different information you can find on the web and some video tutorials you can watch for me, it is still very important to practice and apply it form your self online whenever you are available. Experience is still the best teacher and there's no shortcut to that. You will eventually come up with your own strategy as the time goes by.

You will eventually come up with your own strategy as the time goes by.

Really bad concept. Basic Strategy for blackjack is the mathematically correct way to play every hand regardless of online or live games. Reducing that to some "custom strategy" of your own is a fatal mistake. There are shortcuts to learning basic strategy and as you are learning, playing experience, will help solidify your new skill set. Otherwise, you are exponentially increasing the "house advantage" with plays that are not optimal.

A helpful insight.

I totally agree with you. I can't say that I am a Blackjack expert, but I have been playing for quite a while now. Learning from your mistakes and talking to people who have been playing for a while can teach you a lot.

Again, correct play in blackjack is totally dependent on the use of basic strategy. Learning while playing is a disaster. Many players have lot's of experience and little knowledge about the correct play for all hands, hell very few dealers know basic strategy. I listen to them give players bad advice over and over. If you find a game with good rules, and you play perfect basic strategy, you are about a -.5% disadvantage to the casino. Playing without using perfect basic strategy has been studied and reported by casino consultants to raise the casinos edge to somewhere between -2% and -5%.

Do not fool thyself.

Basic strategy can be learned from the colored matrix cards seen in most casino gift shops or by memorizing 26 simple phrases as I indicated in a previous post. Do either, but do one of them, if you plan on playing blackjack with your money.
