General IS It Really Necessary?

By all accounts, roughly 1% of the U.S. population has an impulsive gambling disorder of one form or another. Yet for at least 15 years now, scientists and medical professionals have been studying this.

With the small amount of the population affected, how necessary are these studies?

The US population by the year 2016 stood at 323.1 million, at least by the records that can be found online. One percent of this is about 3 million people. By all accounts, this is quite a number of people. I'd more interested in what has come out of these studies.
