Some casinos offer you the option to surrender your bet. You forfeit your bet but receive half of your original stake back. Do this when the dealer shows an 8, 9, 10 or ace and you have a 16 or 17. This is a position that generally favors the dealer as there's a greater mathematical probability that they will surpass your hand.

Wrong, generally do this when you have 15/16 and the dealer has 9,10,A.

There are other times to surrender if you are a card counter and have deck composition information.

Sort of the equivalent of chickening out. Mitigating losses

But if you play perfectly and make all the right decisions you are just minimizing the house edge. You need something more for advantage

And experience is that advantage. To me, surrendering is the first step I take in going home. When I get to the point where I'm losing more than I'm winning......I leave.
