If a dealer were to hit a soft 18, how would that affect the house's edge? I'm curious how many of you out there are really serious gamblers and odd figurers. Would it hurt the house edge or help it?

It will increase the house edge by .21% on 6 deck and .20% on double deck.

A weaker game for the players.

I wouldn't call a 5th of one percent very strong. I would still give it to the dealer though and hope for a better next hand.

Be careful with your assessment of the impact. If the house edge is normally -.50% and you change it to -.71% that is a 42% INCREASE, not so insignificant. I assure the speed at which you lose your money will change and be felt.

You guys are all math geniuses when it comes to this stuff. Stealth is absolutely correct. The increase in the house's odds is quite a bit and not good for the players. Thanks for the great responses and I'll keep up with you two in the forum for the future!

By those numbers alone, yes, it does look significant. But a 42% increase of what? That is what really makes the difference.........the size of the bet. The only way to offset that sudden increase in the house edge is to possibly decrease your next bet by 42%, or thereabouts, of what the previous bet was.

42% increase in overall house edge! Changing your bets size is only a valid offset IF you have information about the condition of the deck ,that is, card counting.
