Advantage play Getting rid of addiction

We all understand the side effects of gambling, and worse still, when there's addiction involved. Checking into a rehab, should, in my opinion, be a measure of last resort.

I believe that taking a short break and/or joining a Gamblers Anonymous support group can help. The problem is that most people who are addicted actually never admit it.

They say that most people that are addicted are often in denial. I'd say I have been addicted once or twice before, and it took a lot of effort to finally get myself away from the casino, at least for sometime. I still bet but not to the extent of not having enough muscle to walk away from chasing losses.

Checking into a rehab should definitely be a measure of last resort. I have seen people that have even sold property and other valuables just because of gambling. Try telling them about addiction and they'll hear none of it. Taking breaks is very important.

My opinion is that addiction is a genetic predisposition. Whereas people who perform activities, more often than not, become addicted to those activities.

So unless you can change your genetic makeup, you cannot "cure" addiction.

Zephyr 12 - you are right. No one can "cure" an addiction. Addicts just learn to identify their triggers and then adjust their lives to avoid them to keep it in check.

I agree with zephyr. An addiction can not be cured but it can be controlled. Research has shown that addictions are hereditary however you sometimes hear of only one person in the family with an addiction. It's probably because the others in the family have seen the struggle with the other one and maintained control of the situation.

Once an addict, always an addict just in remission. Speaking from personal experience, (not addicted to gambling), I find that I have a really addictive personality and it is very easy for me to become addicted so I take breaks often!

I beg to differ here because I believe that anyone can walk away from a bad habit, only that the chances of doing this are normally minimal. It could be that or the possibility that 'gambling addiction' is an often misused term.

Advantage players have the right mindset to start. It's not about fun. It's just business.
