Blackjack Figuring the dealer for 10

Have you heard of the people that say that you should always figure the dealer for 10? Is presuming that the dealer has a hole card of 10 a good strategy as most players always want to believe? I am really divided on this one.

You can call that assuming the worst or erring on the side of caution.

You should never assume the dealer has a bad hand. Ever.

There are more cards equalling 10 than any other number. Therefore the chances of a card equal to ten are much higher and therefore have to be taken into consideration. It makes more sense over time to allow the dealer to pull out one of these cards. Assume they have a ten already and try to influence them to go bust. If you have a weak hand assume they have a better hand and/or are closer to busting out.

I do not think it is a good strategy. I think it is just what one person suggested to be his strategy and it may be working for him only. Come to think of it, how many more cards are there that are worth a value of 10. They should be many.

Trying to guess which cards the dealer has is always a tricky one, it's best to try and gauge it as the game progresses and to make judgements based on the flow of games and cards that have already been drawn. The main rule is try and draw as few cards as possible as eventually you'll draw a high card.

Basic strategy is the mathematically correct way to play every combination of hands you can get.
It can be learned by memorizing 28 simple phrases. Any advantage play for blackjack is founded on basic strategy, without it you are wasting your time and money.

Example: My hand has a total of "9"

Phrase is "double down 3 thru 6, otherwise hit"

Now you know the correct play for all conditions when you have a hand that totals 9.

Yes Zohan, figure 10. It's a safe place to be on your side of the table. It may not always pan out in your favor, but it's still the safest bet you can make.

If Zohan is inquisitive enough to ask, then he should be given the right answer. Learn basic strategy which will give you the correct play for any dealer UP card versus your hand total. To do otherwise is foolish and it most assuredly is not the safest bet you can make.
