This keeps coming up in the threads I'm reading, so which version of roulette do you play? The American or European variants are rather different, with the European giving the player better odds, and the American one being more popular in pop culture.

I'm still new to this game, and from what I'm learning it's best to stay away from the American version. I'm not quite sure that I understand why, though.

I also came across a discussion somewhere on this site where they were talking about how one is a better version than the other. I didn't really understand it, but I think that I'm starting to realize that there is an important distinction there.

European wherever it is available. Thanks to the extra 00 the house edge in American is 5.26% rather than the 2.63% in European roulette, and I'd rather have the extra 2% coming back to me.

Ok, I found the thread where someone was giving advice to a noob roulette player about staying away from the American version of the game. Thanks for making the difference clear, Tolly.

Until I read this thread I thought those two variations of roulette were different just because of where they were originated or played. I guess that difference in the house edge is enough to make me choose European.
