Horse & Dog Does racing come naturally to greyhounds?

As an animal lover who has just been introduced to the world of horse and dog racing, I would like to know if this comes naturally to the animals or if they are taught and trained to do so. Is it really safe for the animals?

I know a lot of people share your concerns, but you needn't worry. It comes naturally to the dogs to chase the mechanical lure and so it's not forced in any way.

As far as I know, Greyhounds are natural racers but at a certain stage on their growth (say 12 months), they are normally moved to a training facility. Here, the dogs exercise and train against competition. Afterwards, they are then moved to the tracks where further training is provided.

Greyhounds naturally chase almost anything, well most greyhounds at least. I have a friend who owns two that have never been raced or trained, and he says that he can't let them off-leash at the local dog park because if they see a squirrel they'll be in the next county before he catches up!

Racing greyhounds are trained to focus on the lure and not get distracted by the other dogs, but normally in modern times the training isn't cruel. There have been historical cases of cruelty, and until recently retired racers weren't treated well which is where the sport got a bad name from. It is something the sport is trying to stamp out.

Hi, some things come naturally to the animals. However, they usually are trained to hone in on their skills and to become better. It is not unsafe for the animal unless they get into the hands of a particularly evil trainer.

That is so good to know. That's the one thing that really bothered me about animal racing. I guess it's all right as long as there is no cruelty involved. Thanks for putting me at ease.
