Craps Qualifying a Shooter?

When you are joining a table, do you qualify the shooter first or do you just buy in? There's a lot of discussion on this, and whether it is better to qualify a shooter and then follow their bets, or to watch the whole table and see if people are making money betting against a player. There are lots of methods to qualify a shooter, so do you use any of them, and how well does it work?

I came across an article just the other day about the secrets of qualifying a shooter in craps. I'm still new to the game, too, but from what I understand some people do best when the shooter has no clue even how to make smart bets at the table so they don't feel the need to qualify the shooter at all.

How the shooter bets isn't really my concern, just what they roll, so I tend to watch the dice not the shooter. If the numbers are coming up right, or in a way that I think I can make some money on, then I'll join the table. If not, I don't.

I find that I have better luck if I bet only when I have the dice . Betting on 12 or 14 other players can become
quite expensive

I have seen many players over the years have a good throw , make some money them lose
it all back plus all or part of their original bankroll waiting for the dice to come back around.
I won't do that.

Shooter qualification rules vary. The dice Doctor uses a pass line win to qualify a shooter. Some schools use a five count rule to qualify a shooter. Others teach a statistical method. It is best to qualify the shooter, but also it is also good to qualify or rate the table.

I would select a table that has at least 50% of shooters making the first pass point then buy in and after that qualify the shooter via the five count of the 5, 6 and 8.
